The Conjuring and How I get Freaked out by Movie Trailers

So last night I went to see The Heat, expecting to get a great laugh watching Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy fight crime together, but a trailer for The Conjuring blindsided me. Confession: I get more freaked out by trailers than the actual movies. It’s my overactive imagination. The storyline I devise in my head based on the snippets of action can cause me to jump at every sound as I try to sleep at night. What isn’t shown scares me way more than what is.

A friend wants me to see it with her even though she knows horror movies are my personal psychological torture. I would hate to pay eleven dollars to take some years off my life. Maybe I’ll go to find out if it’s as terrifying as my imagined version.

Strangely, I’m in the process of writing a novel about a ghost, and it contains many of the horror elements I hate in movies. Maybe through writing I can overcome my fears, or just freak myself out even more.

Anyone else get scared just from watching the trailers?

  1. My husband doesn’t like horror films, so other then catching them on HBO some night after he’s in bed, I’ve been without horror flicks for the last 12 years. A new friend of mine, who’s single kept talking about how she wanted to see the Conjuring, but didn’t have anyone to go with. Well I volunteered.
I love a good horror flick. The Conjuring had all the great things I love. A little bit ghost story a little bit devil flick. The was big ‘boo’ moments and really creepy “hair-raising-on-the-back-of-your-arm’ moments. But I was very disappointed in the ending. I won’t give any spoiler you’ll just have to go see it yourself.
It’s a good date night movie though. I screamed out loud and wished my sweetie was there to hide my face in his chest!

    • Very few horror movies end well for some reason. I remember the movie The Ring was so scary until the end. The ending made me laugh and helped me get over all the subtle creepiness that came before. I’ll let you know what I think if my friend manages to drag me there.

  2. I love a good horror movie myself, even if I get the living daylights scared out of me (which might explain the white hair I’m getting) :P. While the trailer of The Conjuring is creepy, I’m hesitant to watch it. Like both of you stated, I’m worried that the ending is going to fall flat.

And yes, the ending to The Ring was HILARIOUS!

  3. For some reason, I fall asleep within the first 10 minutes of a horror film. I have no idea why. Maybe because it’s usually dark? I rarely fall asleep during any other type of film, but pop in a horror flick and I’m out like a light. Needless to say, I don’t go out of my way to watch a scary movie.
